Proton was started in the year 1983 with the headquarters in Shah Alam, Selangor Malaysia. The company designs and manufactures Car and automobile parts. It operates an additional manufacturing plant in Tanjung Milam, Perak.

The company was wholly owned by the government of Malaysia. In the year 1992 , Proton Saga Iswara was launched which was widely used as taxicabs in Malaysia, later  introduced Proton Wira .

It was the first proton car produced with the first diesel engine. From 2000, the company carries a new badge in domestic and export markets.

Proton South Africa started in the year 2003  as a Joint Venture with Pearl Automotive Pty Ltd. ‘Gen 2’ is the first vehicle introduce in South Africa market. Later, the company produced many vehicles like Gen 2 Facelift, Persona Sedan, Savvy AMT, SAGA 1.3 in south Africa.

It has the total strength of 12,000 people all over the world and exports the vehicles in more than 50 countries all over the world which includes UK, Far East, Australia and Singapore.
